Jeff Guidry had no idea what to expect when he began volunteering at the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center in Washington state. As he entered midlife, he needed a spiritual rejuvenation, and Sarvey needed help on Thursdays, his day off.

The life change Guidry sought began the day he met Freedom, a young female bald eagle that had fallen from the aerie and shattered both wings. She was emaciated, scared and lice-infested. But gradually he gained her trust, learned what would heal her and unashamedly fell in love.

Although Freedom would never fly, with Guidry’s devoted care she became a magnificent adult show bird in Sarvey’s wildlife presentations. They were an inseparable team until Guidry was diagnosed with cancer, and it fell to Freedom to rescue her partner.

This is an uplifting story about devotion, perseverance and friendship.

The Gargoyle (Paperback)

This is a story of unbearable suffering and ultimate redemption. The narrator has been burned over his entire body in a horrific car crash. Now, in his hospital bed, he considers himself "a burnt, spent match". And rightly so. Prior to the crash he was a selfish, drug-addled wreck; a maker of pornographic films. He has no real friends and expects no visitors to his room. But soon enters Marianne Engel, a stone sculptress who claims she has been his lover for seven hundred years.
This tiny woman, who coaxes gargoyles out of massive slabs of stone, proceeds to narrate a series of heartbreaking tales explaining the depth of their relationship. It is profound.
And this is a very accomplished first novel from Mr. Davidson.

After suffering a brain injury on his 16th day in the Vietnam war, eighteen-year-old Howard Kapostash returns home in a coma. Sixteen years later, after countless surgeries, setbacks, battles with depression, and long stretches of substance abuse he has settled into a productive life even though he can no longer speak, read or write.
This novel is a gritty and brave look at a tough topic. Howard is a man with numerous flaws aside from his disabilities. How he copes is, at times, scary and noble. But above all, this is as unusual a love story as you will ever read.

Homer & Langley (Hardcover)

Published: Random House, 09/01/2009

Based on the true story of New York's fabled Collyer brothers, this novel is E.L. Doctorow at his best.

Born to wealth and comfort, brothers Homer and Langley grew up in a stately townhouse on Fifth Avenue enjoying the best of high society. Their lives change precipitously, though, when Langley is drafted into the "Great War", sent to Europe, and returns home a victim of mustard gas. Worse, his parents have both died and his beloved Homer has lost his eyesight. Langley cannot cope and quickly embraces a bizarre world-view, pulling gentle Homer in with him.

The brothers have no friends and after the last servant quits they become utter recluses with Langley leaving the building only at night to purchase copies of each and every daily newspaper available in the city for his "research". Surrounded by mountains of newspapers the brothers are very cognizant of the real world but refuse to participate in it. Thus removed, their observations are perceptive and very moving, not what you would expect. Neither is their tragic demise.
