Although I don't usually read much in the way of memoirs or autobiographies, the title and cover of this book caught my attention, so I had to look at it a little more closely. By the time I finished reading the Author's Note, I was hooked. This is a funny, touching, and really well-written book that'll knock your socks off.

As it says on the back of the book, "From intestinal parasites and guerrilla warfare to culture clashes and unexpected friendships, First Comes Love, Then Comes Malaria captures the thrills and absurdities of global humanitarian life in a story that any globetrotter - armchair or otherwise - will love."

This is a terrific book which will make a great gift for anybody graduating and going out into the real world. Also, it's an excellent pick for anybody's book group.

If you were charged with the task of building the Great Pyramid, how would you do it? Jean-Pierre Houdin tackles this puzzle from the perspective of an architect. In this highly readable and convincing book, Brier (an American Egyptologist) and Houdin (a French architect who is not an Egyptologist) explain the latter’s theory of how the Great Pyramid was built. Secret of the Great Pyramid is something of a page-turner, and I can imagine that Houdin’s peers will eventually accept his theory.

This is a lyrical tale of birth, death, and rebirth. Set in New Orleans in the late 1800s, it follows the life of Typhus Morningstar, mainly, revealing how his life will be shaped by a voodoo curse cast 40 years ago that had gone wrong. A demonic struggle and a new form of music change everything. A beautiful, stunning story!

I found this an immensely interesting account of the previous administration’s war on terror. A staff writer for the New Yorker and a winner of several literary awards, Mayer sheds light on the players, the poor decisions, the illegal activities, the desecration of the U.S. Constitution, the unnatural growth of the President’s role – really, the entire situation. Well written, very readable, scary and almost beyond belief.

Mario Acevedo writes clever, funny page-turners. This is his fourth. (The previous three are The Nymphos of Rocky Flats, X-Rated Bloodsuckers, and The Undead Kama Sutra. While Mario’s books don’t have to be read in order, the newer ones do refer back occasionally to the older ones.)

Night Watch, Day Watch, Twilight Watch, and Last Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko

Long ago, there was a War in which the forces of Light and the forces of Dark were so evenly balanced that, were the War allowed to continue, there would be absolutely no survivors. To prevent total annihilation, the leaders of the opposing sides decided upon a truce and drew up the Grand Treaty. The forces of Light created a group called the Night Watch, whose job was to make sure the Dark Ones didn’t violate the Treaty. The forces of Dark instituted a Day Watch to make sure that the Light Ones didn’t violate the Treaty. And a third group, the Inquisition, was formed to arbitrate disputes between the Watches.

These entertaining books, set mostly in modern-day Moscow, follow the career of Light Magician Anton Gorodetsky, an agent of the Night Watch.

Lukyanenko’s
Watch series is built upon an interesting metaphysics and is peppered with Russian humor.

I found this book surprisingly interesting. Pollack describes the similarities and differences between ice & climate of the North and South Poles. He lays out the history of ice, explains how ice moves. A good deal of space is devoted to illustrating how global warming is occurring and the role ice plays in this. Pollack also talks about the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)and its view on the seriousness of climate change; the causes of climate change and how this will shape the future of life on earth.

I hadn't read The Three Musketeers before and was a little worried about my lack of French, but I decided to give it a try anyway. Pevear's English translation is wonderful and his historical notes - illuminating! I didn't know that the story was originally serialized, and I knew almost as much about French history. (Which is just to say that I learned something.)

The story itself is fast paced and so highly engaging that the French names couldn't slow me down! I heartily recommend this translation.

I am thrilled with this well-written, comprehensive, lavishly illustrated book about eco-friendly building! It begins with essays on what green building is all about and "The House as a System", then moves on to the hows and whys of planning. By chapter 4 we finally get to the laying of the foundation! And from chapter 5 on, the actual construction is addressed.
Each chapter examines a particular aspect of home building (foundation, electrical, insulation, siding and decking, and so on) and offers various green options and lots of practical advice. Clear photographs, illustrations, and informative charts are generously sprinkled throughout this useful book.

What I Was (Paperback)

In 1962 H's father drops the sixteen-year-old off at St. Oswald's, a boarding school in East Anglia, England. H describes his time there - it is sometimes quite funny to read about, but it would be a nightmare to live it. Shortly after settling into his routine at St. Oswald's, H and his classmates were on their morning run when H stumbled upon "a strangely familiar boy" his age. As H doesn't fit in with the other kids at school, he makes it his job to befriend this strange, quiet boy.

Meg Rosoff’s book reminds me a little of Tom Sawyer, being set on the water and having a character named Finn, but it really is quite different.

This charming story illustrates just how fragile friendships can be.
